NASA Discovers Building Blocks of Life on Asteroid Bennu

NASA scientists have identified key ingredients for life on the asteroid Bennu, located 40 million miles from Earth.

Samples collected from the space rock by the OSIRIS-REx mission contain amino acids, sodium carbonate, and other compounds essential for life, researchers announced. However, no signs of actual extraterrestrial life were found.

The findings suggest Bennu, estimated to be more than four billion years old, may have once contained water. Scientists say the discovery could provide new insights into how life’s building blocks formed in the early solar system.

The OSIRIS-REx probe launched in 2016, reached Bennu in 2018, and retrieved samples in 2020. The material was returned to Earth in September 2023, allowing for detailed analysis of the asteroid’s composition.
